Based in Spain, Iñaki Gárate (b. 1971) balances a career as a visual designer with a deep technical background in art conservation. Holding a PhD from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, he is an expert in fresco restoration, known for preserving significant murals by Luis Quintanilla in both Spain and the United States. This rigorous understanding of material and history informs his personal practice of creating shapes and textures that add vitality to everyday environments. His paintings focus on realistic interpretations of urban and natural landscapes, heavily influenced by the Spanish tradition of light and shadow. Drawing inspiration from masters like Joaquín Sorolla and Antonio López, Gárate captures the atmosphere of locations such as Zaragoza and the Basque Country. His work explores the interplay of luminosity and structure, translating observed reality into compositions that emphasize the living quality of color and form.
