Stone arches and city layers
This black and white photograph presents a layered view of the urban landscape from a high vantage point. The composition is dominated by a massive stone bridge tower on the right, which features two tall pointed arches and a complex web of suspension cables. A horizontal bridge deck cuts across the middle of the frame, separating the water from the dense cluster of rectangular buildings in the background. While the artist identifies the location as a view from the Manhattan Bridge looking toward the Brooklyn Bridge, the image focuses on the structural patterns of the city.
In the lower third of the frame, a small sailboat with white sails provides a sense of scale against the massive architecture. The eye moves from the dark, heavy textures of the stone tower and the thin lines of the cables toward the lighter tones of the water and the distant skyline. The background is a tight grid of windows and varying building heights that fill the space behind the bridge, creating a contrast between the historical stone forms and the modern city structures.
