Art Analysis
The tactile rhythm of deliberate, layered gestures
In this piece, Böhmer explores the weight and direction of individual strokes, allowing the paint to sit heavily on the surface. The vertical orientation guides the eye through a series of overlapping gestures, where the interplay of light and shadow emerges from the thickness of the application rather than traditional perspective. It is a study of how simple marks can accumulate into a complex visual language.
The composition avoids a single focal point, instead inviting the viewer to wander across the ridges and valleys of the medium. By stripping away representational forms, the artist focuses entirely on the visceral quality of the paint itself. The result is a grounded exploration of balance and tension, where the white space of the canvas acts as a necessary breath between the bold, expressive movements of the brush.
The work centers on the physical act of painting, where the sweep of the brush remains visible and energetic.
The portrait orientation emphasizes a sense of structure and upward movement within the arrangement of shapes.
The heavy application of oil paint creates a physical surface that mimics the uneven, crystalline nature of packed snow.
