Art Analysis

Gold spirals and dark blotches
A dark, vertical mass of jagged shapes sits in the middle of a plain white background. This central cluster is made of overlapping black and grey blotches that stay away from the edges of the frame. Thin lines break away from the main group, forming large arcs and a tight spiral that sit over the darker forms. The limited colors of black, grey, and metallic gold create a stark contrast against the empty white space.
The gold appears in small details throughout the work. It shows up as thin outlines around the irregular edges of the black shapes and as small patches tucked inside them. While the black and grey areas look like heavy clouds, the gold lines are thin and curved, adding a different kind of mark to the composition. These metallic elements follow the same naive brushstrokes the artist mentions, keeping the design simple and light.
This piece belongs to a series where the artist often pairs neutral tones with single bright colors, such as the yellow and grey found in No. 52 and No. 53, or the gold used here and in No. 38.
