Art Analysis

From the artist, Melanie Viola

Amsterdam is called "The Venice of the North". A lot of idyllic canals can be found here. The Gentlemen's canal is considered to be the most important canal in Amsterdam. Some tulips get some color in the typically scene with bicycles at a bridge. Lovely image with some sunrays.

Selective color among grayscale architecture

This composition is organized into three horizontal layers. The bottom third is grounded by a metal railing where three bicycles stand parked next to flower boxes. The middle section opens up to the water of the Herengracht, leading the eye toward a stone bridge and the rows of multi-story buildings that line the canal. Above the rooftops, a wide sky filled with clouds and sunrays occupies the final third of the frame.

The image uses a selective color technique to distinguish the natural elements from the urban surroundings. While the buildings, bridge, and paved surfaces appear in shades of black and white, the flowers in the foreground planters are bright orange with green stems. These small pops of color contrast with the gray tones of the bicycles and the stone architecture, drawing attention to the floral details at the edge of the water.
