Art Analysis
The rhythmic geometry of a Renaissance city plan
In this meticulous rendering of Florence, Simon Goggin explores the intersection of geography and graphic design. The work focuses on the historic heart of the city, utilizing a portrait orientation to emphasize the vertical flow of the Arno river and the concentrated density of the Renaissance center. By stripping away extraneous detail, Goggin highlights the skeletal beauty of the city's plan, allowing the viewer to trace the veins of narrow alleys and the broad presence of historic piazzas.
The composition functions as both a functional guide and a formal study of urban space. The deliberate use of line and negative space creates a sense of order, inviting a slow, wandering gaze across the rooftops and corridors of the Italian capital. It is a quiet, methodical tribute to how a city’s past is etched into its physical layout, presented with a clean, illustrative hand that honors the enduring character of the Tuscan landscape.
The piece functions as a stylized map, translating the physical geography of Vancouver into a vibrant, illustrative narrative.
The artist employs a clear, illustrative approach that prioritizes the clarity of the subject's silhouette and ornamental details.
The portrait orientation focuses the viewer's eye on the stacked strength and architectural feel of the text.
