Art Analysis
From the artist, Melanie Viola
Textured leaf and cursive script
This vertical composition is dominated by a large, sage green leaf shape that stretches across most of the frame. The leaf is positioned so that it touches the top, bottom, and right edges, leaving a narrow strip of off-white background visible on the left side. Several oval and long, thin holes are cut into the leaf, allowing the flat background color to show through the center of the shape. The image relies on these two muted tones to create a clear, graphic contrast.
The green surface of the leaf has a grainy, speckled texture that stands out against the smooth, flat appearance of the off-white areas. In the lower-left corner, the words "go green" are written in a small, flowing cursive script. This lettering sits over the solid background rather than on the leaf itself. The work connects this botanical imagery with an environmental statement, using the simple arrangement of a single organic form and a brief call to action.
