Art Analysis
From the artist, Melanie Viola
Low perspective and selective color
This composition places the viewer low to the ground, looking up through a dense layer of poppy stems and wild plants toward a distant horizon. The lower two-thirds of the frame are filled with these plants, while the top third opens into a sky filled with clouds. While the majority of the scene is rendered in shades of black, white, and grey, the poppy petals are isolated in a bright red. This contrast separates the floral shapes from the monochromatic background of the German field.
The arrangement leads the eye from the large, detailed poppies on the left and center toward a small, white sun in the upper right. This light source is depicted as a simple circle with eight thin lines extending outward. The stems create a series of thin, dark lines that cut across the grey tones of the sky, connecting the dark earth to the bright light above. The red flowers appear scattered throughout the greenery, varying in size and height across the landscape.
