Symmetry and street level perspective
This black and white photograph uses the tall buildings on Washington Street to frame the Manhattan Bridge. The viewer stands on the ground, looking up from a cobblestone road where the dark shadows of the buildings stretch across the foreground. The stone arches of the bridge sit between the vertical lines of the industrial warehouses, while the sky and clouds fill the upper portion of the frame. Below the scene, clean lettering identifies the city, the landmark, and the country.
The composition relies on the contrast between the dark, solid structures of the DUMBO neighborhood and the lighter tones of the sky and bridge. Parked cars line both sides of the street, leading the eye toward the center where the suspension cables and masonry arches appear. The gray tones of the cobblestones and the textured clouds add detail to the large areas of light and shadow.
This piece belongs to a series of urban impressions that captures famous landmarks in major cities like London, Paris, and San Francisco. It serves as one of several views dedicated to New York City, alongside images of Times Square and the Statue of Liberty.
