Art Analysis
From the artist, Melanie Viola
Low angle and tonal contrast
This black and white photograph is arranged so that the robed figure fills most of the frame. The camera looks upward from a low position, making the torch at the top of the raised arm the highest point in the image. The statue stands against a sky filled with clouds, and the composition is built from a range of grey tones. Bright white highlights appear on the clouds, while deep, dark shadows define the heavy folds of the robes and the underside of the crown.
The seven spikes of the crown spread out against the sky, and the tablet held in the left arm creates a solid rectangular shape against the flowing lines of the clothing. Below the image, three lines of clean lettering identify the city, the landmark, and the country. This text is centered and provides a structured base for the visual information above it.
This piece belongs to a larger series of urban impressions that includes landmarks from other major cities such as London, Paris, and San Francisco. Within this collection, the work serves as one of several views focused specifically on New York City.
