Art Analysis
From the artist, Melanie Viola
Low angle through leafy branches
This monochrome photograph uses a low viewpoint to look up at the lattice tower from across the water. The tower stands as the largest object in the frame, positioned centrally behind a bridge and a long boat on the river. Leafy tree branches in the immediate foreground act as a natural border on both the left and right sides, partially obscuring the sky and the edges of the structure. The composition moves the eye from the dark textures of the water and boat at the bottom toward the top of the tower reaching into the pale sky.
The image relies on a range of grey tones to define the different layers of the city. The dark, detailed leaves in the front contrast with the lighter shades of the distant tower and the smooth surface of the river. The horizontal lines of the bridge and the boat provide a steady base for the tall, tapering shape of the landmark. Every element, from the intricate metalwork to the ripples on the water, is rendered without color to create what the artist describes as a classical monochrome impression.
While this version uses a clean black and white finish, the artist also offers the same scene in an urban vintage style within this series.
