Art Analysis
From the artist, Melanie Viola
Sunlight centered above the horizon
The composition is built on a clear horizontal divide between the earth and the sky. In the lower half, a dense field of sunflowers stretches toward the back of the frame, where a dark line of trees and houses marks the horizon. The upper half is dominated by a wide sky that shifts from deep blue at the top to bright orange and white near the center. The sun sits directly above the middle of the horizon line, sending light rays upward and illuminating the scene from the back.
The arrangement creates a sense of depth by changing the scale of the flowers. In the front, the sunflowers are large, showing the texture of the green leaves and brown centers. As the eye moves toward the background, these shapes shrink until they become small yellow dots. This transition emphasizes the scale of the field within the evening atmosphere described by Melanie Viola. The light from the sun spreads across the clouds, creating a bright area that contrasts with the darker tones at the very top of the picture.
