Art Analysis
From the artist, Melanie Viola
Red buses and stone spires
The image is organized around a wide road that leads the eye toward a large stone building. A tall clock tower on the right side of the frame acts as the highest point, while a cloudy sky fills the entire upper half of the composition. Two red double-decker buses are positioned at different depths on the road, with one closer on the left and another further ahead toward the right. A group of small figures stands on a sidewalk near the base of the tower, appearing tiny against the scale of the architecture.
Muted tones of teal and brownish-grey dominate the scene, making the distinct red of the buses stand out. On the back of the nearest bus, white lettering displays the number 159 and a specific date from March 2013. The artist describes this view as a typically British cityscape, where the sharp lines of the spires and the rectangular shapes of the vehicles create a decorative arrangement of urban forms.
