Superimposed lettering over moored gondolas
This black and white photograph looks across a body of water from a slightly elevated position. In the foreground, several long, narrow boats with pointed ends sit moored, angled toward the right side of the frame. These gondolas lead the eye toward a distant horizon line where multi-story buildings and a tall tower with a pointed top stand under a sky filled with large clouds. The composition is split horizontally, with the lower half dominated by the water and boats, while the upper half is covered by large, thin capital letters.
The lettering is arranged in two rows, spelling out "VEN" and "EZIA" across the clouds and skyline. These letters are semi-transparent, allowing the shapes of the buildings and the pointed tower to show through. While the artist notes the romantic nature of the city's untouched palaces and churches, the image focuses on the contrast between the dark, solid shapes of the waiting boats and the light, airy tones of the sky and the superimposed text.
